Whooooowee! What a whirlwind last week was. On Monday we packed up our handcrafted booth (complete with a hand painted backdrop by our graphic designer, Anna Kalbrener), about a gagillion Picky Bars, and pointed the Suby east to Salt Lake City. What was the occasion? Just the biggest tradeshow of the year for the outdoor industry.
Booth building, hyper speed.
Outdoor Retailer is a bi-annual event held in Salt Lake (Summer Market in August, Winter Market in January) where buyers from all sorts of stores across the country get to discover new products, get first looks at upcoming season goodies, and write orders for their shops. Exhibitors range all the way from Stand Up Paddleboards to down-insulated camp hammocks to… you guessed it… energy bars. All the footwear, apparel, gear, tech, and consumables you could ever dream up are on display, vying for a coveted spot on buyers’ retail floors.
By exhibiting at OR we were able to meet with a ton of shops we otherwise wouldn’t have connected with, most of which are outside our usual run/bike specialty. Picky Bars are great for all types of activities, so getting to chat with buyers from climbing gyms, fly fishing shops, and even adventure tour companies was huge. Hopefully that means fueling more adventures for us, and more spots to get a Picky fix around town for you!
We also got to hang with some fellow Bend companies (Hydroflask, Silipint, Ruffwear, Drink Tanks, Gear Fix) and a few of our Picky Team Athletes! Climber Cedar Wright was a true barrel of laughs as expected, snowboarder and Drink Water co-founder Austin Smith is always a good time, and part of the #skimakalu crew (lead by pint-sized badass Emily Harrington) swung by to chat about their upcoming trip to ski/climb Makalu in Nepal that we’re supporting. Good people, all around.
All in all, it was a real great – albeit exhausting – trip. Picky team, out!
No matter the sport, the best way to set yourself up for success is to have a plan. Putting some time into planning it all out will save you from bonehead moves on the big day. ...
